I volunteer with Incentive Mentoring Program http://incentivementoringprogram.org , an amazing nonprofit organization here in Baltimore that provides intensive social and academic support to struggling high schoolers (to learn more, check out the sweet vid on their homepage ;) ). In 2007, 100% of the first cohort of 15 students graduated and matriculated into college, compared with a 40% overall graduation rate in Baltimore!
Amazingly, the second cohort of IMPers is set to graduate in June, and we're planning to send them to India this summer for a 5-week cross-cultural service learning, immersion, research, and outdoor educational experience. We're teaming up with some amazing folks from the Hopkins Schools of Education and Public Health who also worked at the Baraka School in Kenya, as well as some Baraka School alumni! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baraka_School
We had a really successful fundraiser today, and I want to share the video we presented that I worked on with one of the Baraka School alums, Levon Andrews.
International opportunities are rarely made available to resource-deprived inner city adolescents, and as Levon has demonstrated through his commitment to the next generation of Baltimore's youth, such experiences can literally be life changing and have a rippling effect in the community.
Check out the vid we made above, and if you are able to contribute towards the trip (which I will be on!!), there are instructions copied below.
Feel free to email me with any questions :)
Enjoy!
Jordan
