Giant Chess in Trafalgar Square - London Design Festival 2009

A giant chess set featuring 2m-high (6ft 6in) ceramic pieces on a glass board was installed in Trafalgar Square, Central London on September 19, 2009 and tried out by chess enthusiast Anish Ramakrishnan, 9, and C. J. de Mooi, a member of the BBC TV show Eggheads and former Mensa chess champion.

Created by the Spanish designer Jaime Hayon, who has lived in London for three years and was partly inspired by the Battle of Trafalgar, the chess board forms the centrepiece of the London Design Festival . Many of the pieces, which are mounted on casters, are intended to reflect Londons buildings, spires and domes.

Players can sit on thrones overlooking the board and direct handlers to move the pieces.
