Fritz survived because it was a minor wound to the side of his belly. In those days the musket was powerful enough to inflict a fatal wound. These two were close enough that I think had Fritz got hit say just under his belly button nothing could have been done to save him. And, unfortunately, it probably would have been a very painful death lasting even one or two days. Even into the civil war and old west a belly wound was almost always fatal. The kid was lucky.

Possibly. I'm not very savvy when it comes to 19th century weaponry, but Blunt was quite a distance from him. maybe that distance might have something to so with the lessening of Fritz's injury?

If that musket ball had hit the kid in the middle of his belly he would have died a very painful death.
