Every few films, Burt would be without a mustache. Burt's next film would be STARTING OVER where he doesn't have a mustache, its obvious he was about to begin filming. This is not the last time he would do this on the show.

The reason this works is because Reynolds was a huge star at the time. It was a hip, surprising, off the wall thing for a major Hollywood guy to do, and it showed he didn't take himself too seriously.

I don't know of any comedian who would do something this edgy on TV today. Maybe Jim Carey?
They are all so fearful now. Their agents would shit in their pants if they saw their star change their look right in front of 10 million people.
