The 2nd gear enables the unicyclist to go 1.5 times faster than in 1st gear :
4 gear changes before passing in front of the red van and 1 change in 2nd just after.
At the end, start in 2nd gear.
Maximum speed 23 km/h.
There is a little play with the pedals because of the gears.
To pedal in 2nd gear requires more concentration otherwise balance can be lost more easily.
1-2 months after the first use, spokes must be tightened again by a mechanic.
Heavy unicyclists on a big wheel shouldn't ride uphill in 2nd gear.
Use a torque wrench to tighten the 14 mm axle bolt to 50 Nm, otherwise the crankarm can loosen at any time.
After pushing the gear shift button to change gear, check that there is still some play underneath the gear shift button when you push it a little bit more (this play allows the new gear to engage).
Use a torque screwdriver to tighten the screw in the gear shift button to 1.1 Nm, otherwise you lose the gear shift button.

  • I want one! Seriously, where can I get one!

  • Seek on Internet "schlumpf innovations", "Unicycle hubs" and "price list, order form"

  • Forgive me for commenting twice, but if that is a 29" geared uni, shouldn't the top speed you mentioned be greater than 23km/h (14.2mph)...reason why I ask is because I clocked myself doing 14.7 mph on a standard 29" uni with 125mm cranks. Or is that a 24" schlumph? I'm lousy at detecting wheel sizes in pictures & videos. At any rate, get back to me on that (if you're right about the top speed w/ gear hub turned ON). I love the "science" behind unicycles & speed. thanks for your excellent video!

  • As you see on the tyre in the video, it's a 28" geared unicycle.

I controlled my speed with GPS and I couldn't go faster than 24 km/h : with my 165 mm cranks I couldn't increase my rhythm of pedalling without falling (in 2nd gear balance can be lost more easily).

At the 2008 Dusseldorf Marathon (Germany), the winner had an average speed of 26.6 km/h using a 36" geared uni (a Schlumpf hub on a Coker) : seek on Internet "schlumpf innovations", "Unicycle hubs", "events, news" and "photos part 1"
