Here is a tutorial for a three-colour cast on, using one colour as edging and alternating 2 colours for the loops. It's useful for fair-isle patterns that start straight away, or for twined knitting.

Wouldn't it be easier to hold the strains on three fingers? Like your making a #3 with your ring and pinkie finger down.
