Here's a style of music I'm trying for the first time - a New Orleans Second-Line feel.
A lot of buzz rolls and it's slightly swung.
Am I a big New Orleans 2nd line groove fan? No. Am I glad I had to learn some new skill sets to make a decent attempt at this tune? You BET!!!

This looks easy.....until you try and play it. Enjoy!

Here's a description of the sequence of events with Fran Merante that took place in the learning process that led up to the creation of the Mud Sauce video.

Phase 1. - Fran suggests a few possible tunes usually in a style that I haven't tried yet. - we pick a tune and listen to it just once with the drums if it has a drum track and then analyze the song chart. - no listening is allowed of other versions of the tune on YouTube, etc. so the creative process remains at the forefront. I'm creating a drum track, not copying other ideas.

Phase 2. - Fran will show me some exercises and routines to get the feel and build the skill-sets needed to form a "musical vocabulary" for the new style. - For study material on this tune we adapted some exercises from Ted Reed's Syncopation for the buzz rolls, practiced some basic ideas from some Stanton Moore pdf's I found, plus some tunes from the Groove Essentials series, and a few things on YouTube for ideas on the style. This phase can last 3 or 4 weeks before even trying to play the new tune.

Phase 3. - Attempt to use the ideas from Phase 2 in various sections of the tune and tie it all together. - This phase is also for beginning the recording and analysis to sift through ideas - some will be great, others will not be so great. - another 4 weeks easily on this phase.

Phase 4 - Now all of the ideas are coming together and you realize the notes and phrases start feeling good when played. - Musical ideas start to take shape and come together about now. A bit more recording and analysis for 3 or 4 weeks.

Phase 5 - Once a game plan is in place for the tune recording begins for the vid plus mixing audio, etc. - And you wonder why this stuff takes so long......on top of my regular practicing and YouTube collabs, etc.!!

  • Nice one Tom. I'm checking out this song because I haven't heard it yet until now. This song's a real gem. You look like you're thoroughly enjoying and getting into this number like I am. Excellent performance my friend.

  • @Herfortz Thank you so much! That Weckl stuff isn't easy.

  • Where does the "chick" hi-hat sound in the downbeat at the first minute of the song comes from? You don't seem to step on the hi-hat all 8th notes...is it counting playback?

  • @Synkopath7

It's the annoying click track on the down beat. That's a problem with "playalongs"...they should give you a separate click track.
