There was one thing I agreed Mr. Spong with...
"By that gospel.. I will die"
You sure will, because that "gospel" was no gospel at all.... The essence of christianity ... to live more fully??? whaat?
I hardly can listen to that kind of twisting..
I love when he spoke of wanting to be a disciple of Jesus and tried to explain what that meant.... or how he understood it...
I'm sorry sir... JESUS SAID THAT IF YOU KEEP MY WORD, THEN ARE YOU MY DISCIPLES AND YOU WOULD KNOW THE TRUTH!

Spong's arguments don't hold much weight to me. As a believer, if you pick and choose what parts of God's word you want to listen to and believe, then you have reformed him in your own desired image. God is God, he does not conform to what feels comfortable to us, without him we wouldn't have permission to breathe. Even Nebuchadnezzar knew this and he was the king of Babylon. I have a feeling that Spong has never really met Jesus or the Holy Spirit.

@jonnyneo53: He DOES present concrete evidence. Didn't you listen when he was speaking about Carl Sagan? His main thrust is NOT buying into these stories being LITERAL. It takes away any credibility if we're dealing in men flying up into the sky...

@KingDcome11 : You should probably look more at yourself if you think that man is pathetic because he eschews the supernatural. We can't live in a modern world and accept silly ideas like a man floating up through the clouds(Acts 1:9). Where's your intellectual honesty as you live in 2012?

Spong, throughout the entire debate, used words like "I believe", "The way I see it", and "I think". He never presented concrete evidence, only personal opinion. Craig, on the other hand, presented Evidence in a clear and conrete manner. Craig clearly won this debate.

"You can't determine the truth by what appeals to you."-Lane Craig
"I don't find it terribly edifying to spend much of our time figuring out what the mind of Jesus was..."-Spong
Regardless of our preconceived notions, we must allow Jesus to remain as he is through careful study. Thus, we will be conformed to his way of thinking, his desires, and his attitude to mankind.

Jesus ascended up and through the heavenlies. That's what the Greek means.

Spong feels ashamed of the resurrection and he just wants people to like him for denying the supernatural. He's just trying to adjust Jesus to his life even if that means compromising the uniqueness of Christianity. I have no respect for this person. He;s pathetic

So many comments against Spong. Whilst I disagree with him, I can respect him. I think he is honestly following his conscience and he appears more charitable and kind than many fundamentalists. I would also hasten to add, that the kind of views Spong holds are directly caused by extreme right wing fundamentalist views about scripture and Christianity. Liberalism is spawned by conservative nonsense. there is a middle way but sadly the culture wars in the US Christianity always seem to polarize

"Be all that you can be?" I thought that was the army's slogan. Dang, migh as well "just do it" This bishop is a laughing scheme. How can he tell us the way God is if he claims he can't tell us who is he is? that is a contradiction. "I can't tell you who god is but he wants you to "be all that you can be"". Man that confuses me more than mathematics.
