I'm a beginner and am working on my first kit. When I filed and then sanded it (using a sanding block), the resin dust went everywhere. But I mainly wore a mask, is this suffcient protection? Or should I use sand paper next time?

yeah a dust mask should be fine, you can also use a bit of water on your wet and dry to contain the dust, but it does make a bit of a slurry, just wipe it with a cloth
