Black is a construction which articulates a recent social-political reality of people of color (pigmented people). Black is not a racial family, an ethnic group or a super-ethnic group. Political blackness is thus not an identity but moreover a social-political consequence of a world which after colonialism and slavery existed in those color terms. An identity is generally geographical and ties the people to their native environment or their core doctrine (Jews of Judaism, Muslims of Islam, Chinese of China). African and black are not interchangeable just as Dark continent and Africa are not. Self-determination allows a people to re-examine definitions and sculpt them to their reality. Black, like Negro is facing linguistic extinction, especially in academic circles, due to its poor foundation in speaking about the oldest and most diverse people on the planet.

Well, I wondered about that too. I think that just like we in america saw/see degrading images of Africans in Africa (ie, Africans starving, living in poverty, ravaged w/HIV) on TV when we were kids; Africans in Africa saw/see degrading images of African-Americans in the United States (ie, drug dealers, pimps/hoe, materialistic rapper) so they think negatively of us. Its not a coincidence that there is lack of unity seen between Africans across the globe and Africans in the US.

I don't think so. Dark skin does not mean you HAD to originate in Africa, if white people are fighting to be called Africans, Afrikans, or even African Americans then is it really that far fetched to conceive the notion that all Blacks are NOT from Africa.

if you look through your history books you will find that AFRICA was named after a roman general. it started as a name of a place in modern day tunisia and then became the name for the continent as romans referred to the land of the south as AFRICA in reference to their port in TUNISIA and people misinterpreted it as the whole continent.

original names for african were NUBIA, PUNT etc

I think Black is an adequate term for "african americans" simply because we are lost. Chinese people don't need to be called yellow because they can identify with a culture and tradition. African Americans are ghosts without a history beyond slavery as we were robbed of such luxuries of cultural ethnicity. We ASSUME we are African, Jamaican, etc, and we identify with what society proclaims us to be; wether that is African, Negro, Niggas, Niggers, etc.. --

Europeans do not come from Europe, Asians dont come from Asia, etc... At one point in history only "black" ppl existed in which being referred to as "black" was nonexistent because there was no deviation. You were identified by your fathers name. Eventually population increase & disease came as pple had to be separated. Those who were sent to "Europe" (prob had a different name then) were disease ridden, leprosy and all the documented plagues and adapted to the colder climate. --
