These profiles begin to explore what systems engineering is as seen through the roles of Benjamin Reed and Jackie Townsend on the Hubble Space Telescope. Reed is a materials assurance engineer who has a background in chemistry and has most recently worked on improving Hubble's outer blanket layer. Townsend came to Goddard with a background in physics and has served as the instrument manager of Hubble's newest imager, Wide Field Camera 3. Through their personal backgrounds and current work, Reed and Townsend show that great engineers share patience, tenacity, and a passion for problem solving.

  • What an amazing and dynamic lady Jackie! love it, take the hard road and a the road less travelled and give it everything!

  • her daughter goes to my school in silver spring way to go Mrs.Dazo

  • Way to go, Jackie!

It has been my pleasure to work with Ms. Townsend. She is a true professional - stay tuned, I expect her to leave her mark on this agency and industry as an engineer, manager, and pioneer.

  • cute

  • I live in the same country as NASA and don't have the cash to get into school because we hardly have the money ourselves. I live in Modesto, CA, USA. It's a very inspiring video, but when it comes down to it, it's cold hard cash that seperates you from your dream. Everyone says "Student Loans! Scholarships!" , but when you have 1,000,000 students applying for those scholarships that are thinking at Genius level, the chance of you getting picked is VERY slim.

  • inspiring

  • nice

  • What about the gun engineer to build the sentry to keep RED away from your equipment?

But seriously, good for her to kicking it up a notch and achieving something like that.

  • Aye!

  • But there are so many young scientists in developing countries who unfortunately can't afford either go to NASA or find an appropriate job in the place where they are living! I think that space exploration should be developed and a brand new organization or union should be established (like NATO) which would motivate acceding countries to invest fixed rates from their GDP in space exploration and development!
