Hermit Crab named "Rocket" changing his shell

I do need to get more shells for the four guys that are in the aquarium. Rocket is the only one who is not so happy in his current home. He changed into the same shell three times, I started taping second half of his change.

Cute hermit crabs :) I have 2 of my own :) By the way, why does he wear those painted shells? Painted shells are very unhealthy for them. I actually don't care much about the appearence of the shell so my 2 hermit crabs wear natural shells, all i'm saying is maybe you should switch to natural if u want your crabbies to be more healthy and happy :)

@shiningstarsrule999 Hi there, you are absolutely correct about the painted shells but they all died due to climate. It was sad, all died, one by one in the winter. The air was too dry and not warm enough. =(

why do they have painted shells? that will eventually kill it by itself. its toxic to the hermie. so dont blame the temperature, blame whever had the idea to paint them!!!

@iknowulovemee1 I had originally bought the crabs at a mall, with the shells already painted. I am aware now that the paint can be harmful due to chipping, not sure about it being "toxic" to them but I do know that the climate has a great deal to do with their survival. But I agree with you, the crabs should have plain shells but again, the painted onces seems to be more appealing. =)

I had 5 crabs, but my 3 male died. I'm left with 2 girls......My first ever crab's shell was painted, but he died of old age...

@shadowlover247 That's too bad.  Mine pretty much died one by one, sadly. They were easy to care for but the temp and the requirement for the crabbies to be in a warm and humid environment may have done it. Good luck with your two remaining girls. =)

Guys, the painted shells of the hermit crabs CAN be harmful. But people use NON-TOXIC PAINT. And dont paint the inside!

@minyong24 then try to buy a humidifier. YOu can find them in local pet stores. They are around 50 bucks and work very well. You don't need a sponge in your tank

Unlike humans I don't think Hermit crabs care for fashion and certainly dont have an eye for it. He chose to wear a hollowed out soccer ball instead of that flashy green, rhinestone covered attire...lol

On a more serious note; I guess people should get the facts before they say whether the paints are harmful or not. I would think it all depends on what it is painted with and it is hard (Imposible) to tell from a video.... hmm,I dont know? is that latex or acrylic or what?

Im just saying they might of died from the paint if any of it chipped off and if u get any more you should just by a under neath heating pad or a heat lamp
