http://www.pbs.org/lifepart2 Author Darryl Pinckney poignantly describes the pleasure of trading the hip, downtown lifestyle of his youth for the cozy domestic pleasures of middle age. The new season of LIFE (PART 2) is on PBS, see entire episodes online at http://www.pbs.org/lifepart2

  • Maybe PBS could do another film called DEATH.

It could be all about modern journalism.

  • i find the youth of today totally not hip or cool! they remind me more of our grandparents buying into the propaganda of our governments and media. thats not cool!!!

  • You sound like an oldtimer to talk to a non-oldtimer like that

    That is funny

Youth is wasted on the "young"

How is young defined anyway ?

You do not have a young mindset

Heh, well at 38 you're probably not much "younger" than him ?

    weird

  • I totally agree.. I find the generation older than me to be the coolest

  • You sound infantile

Furtermore, how is he old ? Just because you sound like an infantile nerd, doesn't mean he's old

I find the video and your comment both silly

  • hip has nothing to do with age

how unhip (what a word) to think so

  • I just this piece by Pickney yesterday on PBS(I guess it was a re-broadcast). It's really a brilliant little piece- witty, insightful, full of vivid and telling details. I love that line about his desire to get back to the sound of his radiators. And it argues for a kind of wise resignation and accommodation to the inevitable.

  • hip="no fear of the young"

HOW TRUE. I love that statement.

I will never fear young ones for they too have lessons to teach while I step futher on this path of life. Thank you for this wonderufl series!

  • I am a vessel of the culture that I have been exposed to, and (choose to) reflect. Everything about us is, and will be, "dated"...it's just a marker of the times that we are an example of. So be it...

  • This should be an SNL parody.

  • One things for sure: if you think you're hip (or cool), you are not! Of course, I always wanted to be "hip", but I don't think I ever managed it.

These days I work alot with kids in schools and sometimes they tell me that I'm cool which makes me feel good. Then I think, well, it only took me 40 or so years to get to be the way I am.

I like to think being reliable, curious and willing to try new things is better, but I may be wrong. Anyway, I still don't know what it means to be "hip". Peace!
