I truly don't understand why every virtuoso should oftentimes double the speed of the music. Is there really need to do that? Why the rush? @6:15 the speed just swallowed up the drama unfolding intensely with the ascending melody. I believe at this point Beethoven would have been applying tempi to complement his music rather than to show off his speed skills. Some biographers even commented that he was becoming more 'spiritual' in this period. Somehow I didn't see that in this sonata #30 here.

These op nos. I think are a final statement from Beethoven. They are the best sonatas in my opinion and mark on musical achievements way beyond Beethoven's time leading the way for A. Schoenberg.

I absolutely can't believe how good this is. The 31st sonata is very well played and very good, but the 30th is on a level that is just beyond belief. Hamelin's playing is clear, the feeling is absolutely overflowing... I can't imagine a more perfect rendition of my favorite piece of all time (even though there are some mistakes). Bravo Hamelin!
