Actually the indians don't get better melee. Kinda strange I know. I've played the warpath campaign and it's highly enjoyable, but when you are the native americans you have to rely on stealth and numbers since your units can sneak through the grass, but for the most part they aren't particularly strong. Oh, and Custer lost to the indians because he was an idiot who though his little group of 211 men could take on over 1000 indians in their land.
