George Russell (1923-2009) was one of the great innovators in jazz music theory and practice over his long and varied career. His "New York, N.Y." album was recorded in 1958 with a stellar lineup including Art Farmer, Doc Severinson, Joe Ferrante, Joe Wilder and Ernie Royal on trumpet; Bob Brookmeyer, Frank Rehak, Jimmy Cleveland and Tom Mitchell on trombone; John Coltrane, Benny Golson and Al Cohn on tenor saxophone; Hal McKusick and Phil Woods on alto saxophone; Sol Schlinger and Gene Allen on baritone saxophone; Bill Evans on piano; Milt Hinton and George Duvivier on bass, Barry Galbraith on guitar; and Charlie Persip and Max Roach on drums. Jon Hendricks was the narrator. George Russell was the arranger and director of the project. There are five selections in the 'New York, N.Y.' suite, "Manhattan" being the opening track. It is wonderful to think of John Coltrane jumping in a cab to play on the "Kind Of Blue" sessions with Miles Davis, then another the next day to record "Naima" on his own "Giant Steps" album, then to join Bill Evans again with George Russell on the "New York, N.Y." recording. New York City was filled with jazz and its greatest practitioners in those days. George Russell was one of the main currents in its river, though he remained somewhat lesser known outside the world of his fellow artists and listeners, those who recognized his genius. It is never too late for people to discover his arresting, engaging music. George Russell died in July 2009. I used to play George's work on a regular basis when I ran a jazz radio program for many years on CFRO out of Vancouver. I strongly recommend his work. Please visit his website at http://www.georgerussell.com/ and consider purchasing his unique music. ~DL
