Here, Callas explains that she decided to slim because her excess weight was hampering her performances on stage. She talks about her attitude to her own achievements and shortcomings, and advocates constant self-analysis and self-criticism. she says that her worst problem is her pessimism. Callas explain that she had to sing roles like Isolde and Turandot early in her carer in order to obtain engagements, but she prefers the bel canto repertoire. Tosca is not a part that appeals much to her. She describes how she successfully auditioned for the role of Isolde for Tulio Serafin although she was sight-reading the music. Callas says that to sing one Norma is a much greater strain than singing several Isoldes or Brünnhildes.

This interview with Maria Callas by the American opera commentator Edward Downes was broadcast in the USA in two parts during intermissions of the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts on December 30th 1967 and January 13 1968.
