Minister for Immigration and Registration of Persons Otieno Kajwang says the government does not know the exact number of people living in Kenya and is finding it difficult to plan for everyone. Speaking to the media after a tour of Malindi immigration offices, Kajwang said only forty percent of Kenyans are registered at birth.

  • even alliens???

  • Hi Shonde2: Institutions need to be straightened out for effective services! You right it could be turned into another cash cow for corrupt bureaucrats. Kajwang i/c? Well.

  • Hon. Kajwang, B4 I may agree with you on the need for a data base, I want to be assured of the technological and ethical security of the data base.I do not want my vital statistics accesed by any government employee at whim and I also don't want it sold to some bidder.OK.

  • Further I wonder if you have considred the consequences of this move on national security, there are myriad reasons why even developed nations are slow on the idea of gathering such a comprehensive database in a single authoritative source. Give me call sir and lets discuss some of these issues and how they may be addressed without compromising personal privacy and national security.OK Hon. MAPAMBANO?

  • Also, bear in mind that as long as there are no legal processes through which aliens can maintain their stay in Kenya or become citizens, the idea of registering them is a non starter. You do not want a data base for the police and immigration personell to blackmail foreigners and extract bribes from them. Sir, you got a hell of a lot of homework to do and make sure the puppy does'nt eat it

  • Census is not a useless activity and done the right way. While I agree that many developed countries have moved from the census system, they have alternative avenues of collecting relevant information that countries like Kenya can only do via census for now. Meanwhile, the USA still does the census and I can assure that they too are struggling counting undocumented persons.

  • What button will Kajwang,

a lawyer?/politician be pressing? Uhuru can't even get the correct budget figures using same GoK computers...n wht will make aliens come out of their closets to be included in that data base? Kajwang kidding himself as usual! Just float a number...at least it'll cost taxpayer nuthin.

  • Nearly half a century since independence and we are unable to establish a reliable database! Its the results of the greed culture that overtook Africa after the colonists. Our own leaders have faired worse than the aliens, despite the torment of being under colonisation! Our leadership is pathetic!

  • Keep a data base of every body in Kenya and we avoid useless activities like the coming Census. Other countries monitors their population trends and sizes on daily basis with every new birth or death accounted for. Kenya hata haijui raia wake ni kina nani!!!
