This tip ensures that the racquet hand is sufficiently relaxed and does over-squeeze the grip. In the ready position the right-handed hitter starts with the racquet hand on the right hip while the left or non-dominant hand supports the racquet, takes the racquet back, and turns the shoulders and hips. Then, at the last moment, the racquet hand takes the grip and pulls it forwards, literally pulling it from the support of the non-dominant hand. This is such an important little tug of war between the racquet hand and the non-racquet hand, that there's even a training aid to help players get a feel for this critical motion. The Backhand Fixer simply attaches around both wrists with Velcro and just before contact the Velcro should pull apart as we are now demonstrating. The more explosive the separation of the hands, the more racquet head speed will be generated with more pace transferred to the ball. www.oncourtoffcourt.com

  • Yes, that makes sense for sure. Just keep in mind that that the hitting arm has to be relaxed to accelerate. Also, as players improve their slice backhands, there's also some extra wrist action in the backswing. Take a look at Mr. Roger Federer (and others) and you'll see what I mean...

  • Something that *I* think that this nice player does (at least on a couple of the shots) that is at *least* as important for "pop" on a slice is that, once he grabs the racket, he points the "butt" of the racket (at least a little bit) skyward (and maybe a bit toward the back fence) before the forward stroke. Much like with the loop on the topspin shot, it means more of a "change in direction" of the other end of the racket, and therefore more racket head speed. What do you think?
