Hey, I'm doing a university assignment on the Marathon Des Sables. We are looking at the physical demands and the acute and chronic effects of exercise in the marathons environment. What type of training did you do and preparations did you take to overcome any problems you might of over come in the desert. Did you go anywhere to train for the heat and where you effected by the night? Be great if you could answer any of my questions, Thanks B.

I want to run this race some day. At the moment I'm only doing 10 K's but I'm starting a 35 week schedule to move onto full marathons.
I bet it's gonna take several years to get to this level, giving myself 7 years for it so I'll be 25

Hi there, I am interested in running the MdS in 2012. I was just wondering what the weight of the backpack was in general.
Good on you mate for finishing!
At the start it looks like everyone is wearing the same shoes, or gaiters... A lot of red in the crowd. Why is that? Sponsor provided gear or a team or it just happens to be the same pair of gaiters everyone uses?

@TheSlurpeeCup They were the recommended gaiters from the organisers and they worked absolutely fine for me (I think they come in blue as well but most people went for red). Basically, if you get sand in your shoes, your feet won't survive so it's essential to have gaiters.

HI, I am in this year and can you let me know what camera you took ,can you also let me know what the Temperature got down to at night

I took a Canon Ixus 100 IS, a great little camera. I'm not sure exactly how low the temperature got, but it got pretty cold when we had to sleep on the dirt at check point 5 during the night stage because there was no space left in the tents. We were absolutely fine and never cold when we were on the move though. Good luck! It'll be a blast.

The year we did it, they put a tiny glow stick on each sign post, which were several miles apart, and every competitor had to wear a glow stick on their back so people could follow.
