I'm well aware. I'm not denying the power of complex analysis or anything like that. I'm simply saying that for basic algebra students, they tend to consider the real case first, and then move on to the complex case if warranted.

@JonathonRedley real numbers are a subset/subspace of complex numbers. what is the log of a negative number, or the nth root of a negative number, or what is the closed line integral of a real function with a pole on a loop containing the pole? how do we model air turbulence on a wing span of an F16? u guessed it: complex analysis actually forms the basis of algebra and real analysis is simply killing the imaginary part.

True, but complex numbers aren't exactly a part of basic algebra, so it's prudent to only consider the real case at first.

@JonathonRedley The square root function only has a positive output in the real domain, but in the complex domain negatives are allowed
