Conflict. Courage. Moral Choice. BREAKING THE RULES.

The untold story from South Africa - whites who opposed and fought apartheid.
Against family, friends, community and government...they chose a different path.

BREAKING THE RULES takes us from the vibrant cities and townships of South Africa today on a journey back through over four decades of brutal oppression, confrontation, violence and, finally, change. A new South Africa built on the noble tradition of "non-racialism."

The film unfolds through the eyes of four individuals who helped bring apartheid to an end - the steely parliamentarian Helen Suzman, the daring armed revolutionary Ronnie Kasrils, the rebellious Afrikaner journalist Max du Preez and the defiant student leader Kate Philip. Other voices reveal more about this triumphant struggle for racial justice and freedom - from Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu to activists, artists, political leaders and former prisoners.

The power of individuals to make a difference. BREAKING THE RULES provokes each of us to examine our own reactions to injustice and inspires us to imagine the possibilities for understanding and reconciliation.

  • R.I.P Helen Suzman, a great loss to our country. May she find peace.

  • hi spitgesiggie, of the black people getting killed in apartheid SA, 95% was due to black on black political violence (you can google: "The killing fields of post-apartheid South Africa" by Vusile Tsabalala if you want proof).

  • Ronnie Kassrils is the cutes person I know.

  • I emailed a NZ anti-appartheid activist but no reply - he's too busy protesting about the next sensational bs that draws a lot of attention to himself. If a topic isnt popular activist wont cover it because that's how they get their sense of self-worth: crowds in awe of them. The issue is not morality, but popularity.

  • there were always 20 000 people getting killed...like now they are in the great majority black people .....you just didn't give a fuck then because it didn't suit your agenda...an agenda to try and discredit a black government......fuck off you bitter cunt and stop pretending you care .....

  • Ronnie, where are you now? Disappeared like all the other non-black anti-apartheid activists. The country is really drowning in blood now. Why don't you speak out against the slaughter of 20,000 people annually now? Max, where are you? Fired by your SABC boss for your TV-program unsimpathetic to the black regime.
