Classic clip of the master box player, Tony MacMahon from Clare. Sonny Brogan is named at the beginning of the clip as the major influence on this (then) 17 year-old musician.

  • What show is this taken from? Is there any more footage from it? Good effort for the upload!

  • @dchamps321

Sorry I don't have more info about the clip - an older Irish person might recognise the presenter or the show which I believe was on RTE. I only re-uploaded it when it disappeared from elsewhere!

  • Why not use his full name?

  • @brendantheprettygood

It seems that this clip has been removed from youtube repeatedly and I'm guessing that it's because of copyright and TM. I'm hoping this one will survive for a bit longer if I don't use the full name or tags. It's too good a clip to not have available, especially for study by box players! So what did you think of the clip?

  • Ah ok. I found it last night after a loooong search (couldn't remember his name) because I saw it a few years back. I remember how annoyed I was when it was taken off so thank you for re-uploading, it's one of my favourite videos!

  • tony is the master of the box in my book

  • That's a young Finbar Furey sitting with his pipes to the left of Tony. Another master of Irish music.

  • An interesting piece..well done for upload. You can already hear his ear for melody .

  • In this old video you see a young and talented Tony MacMahon, and you can hear his warm sound already.he must be in his early 20 ...

  • I like this one very much..

I wonder what it would sound like if there was an acompanienent of a banjo with rhe 2nd reel

  • What a great pairing of tunes. Masterful player. Much to study here.
