A great video produced by the Province of Ontario to inform homeowners of the benefits of the ecoEnergy and Ontario Home Energy Savings programs.
Ontario helps homeowners make green changes - Toronto
Vince Hughes - EcoEnergy auditor: Homes waste on average thirty per cent to fifty per cent through the walls, through the windows, through the attic.
Sheilah Doherty - Ontario homeowner: Oh my heavens.
Eco-Energy auditor: Yes, so that is why the walls need to get insulated.
Ontario homeowner: We did an energy audit because we knew that being a 1929 house, that there were probably things we could do to improve it. So let's go up and see the attic.
Eco-Energy auditor: Okay then.
An energy audit is a comprehensive basement to attic, energy inspection of your home. It entails a blower-door test. It entails looking into the attic. Looking at the insulation in the basement, in the walls. It is determining how much energy your home uses to heat and to run its appliances.
Right now we are just feeling air blowing right in there, and that is heat loss in the winter time.
Ontario homeowner: I think doing an energy audit is a great idea for people who don't know a lot about how to make their house more energy efficient, because it is not expensive to do, and you can get some really good tips you can act on really quickly.
Eco-Energy auditor: Is the floor above, but think of the floor and the rim joist, where there is probably an uninsulated wall. Have the walls been insulated?
Ontario homeowner: No they are not.
Eco-Energy auditor: Homeowners who schedule a home energy audit with a certified energy advisor will receive a rebate from the province of Ontario that covers half, up to one-hundred and fifty dollars of the cost of the audit. After the first audit homeowners have eighteen months to complete some or all the improvements suggested by the energy advisor to qualify for up to ten-thousand dollars in government rebates.
Ontario homeowner: I am fascinated now about, by the fact that if you see a cobweb, what that indicates. I simply care about the environment. I feel we are caretakers. We are handing it on to the next generation. I can't just talk about it. I have to do it!
