On January 6, 1957, Elvis Presley asked Ed Sullivan to request those watching the program to send contributions to help thje refugees which suffered from the invasion, which started on October 24, 1956. It brought about, in a period of 12 months, contributions in excess if SFR 26 million. At the then exchange rate (4.34 SFR per US$), this translated into US$6 million in 1957 dollars which when adjusted for inflation would represent a staggering US$44 million in today´s dollars.
