This is a tribute to one of the greatest voices of all time.
Claudia Muzio 1889-1936
An expressive and magnificent artist, who has it all.
Famed Italian tenor Giacomo Lauri-Volpi, in his incredible books about music and philosophy , specifically in his book about the singers of his day,
"Le voci parallele" spoke about Muzio and describes Muzio's sound as a voice full of "tears and sighs"- she has long been an example of what opera can be about when it is not just someone singing notes of music, but using them to convey the deepest emotions of not just the singer, but all of us., My mother introduced me to her, yet another thing to thank her for..... I love this voice so much, I grew up listening to and being moved by this great artist, her life and her music.
This selection is a melody written by her great friend and admirer, Lincinio Refice (1885-1954), a priest that wrote many pieces for Muzio, one most famously being his sacred opera "Cecilia", and this little beauty.
He wanted someone with God in their throat........
He found it!
Enjoy!!
Frankly, anyone hearing her is never going to be the same.
No copyright infringement intended. Private video of mine made by me in tribute.
The words in Italian:
Era il ciel un arco azzurro di fulgor
chiara luce si versava nel mio cuor.
Ombra di nube, non mi offuscare,
della vita non velarmi la beltà.
Vola o nube, vola via da me lontan;
sia disperso questo mio tormento arcan.
Ancora luce, ancora azzurro!
Il sereno vegga per leternità!

I´ve known an old teacher who sung at Rio with her. He worked whith Callas, and Del Monaco after...but above his Piano a picture of Muzio was always the most important thing in his room.....
Geraldo Chagas, said she was really unforgetable onstage.

Loved this and listened again. Then noticed you had given us the words. Listened once more to hear her caressing them. I'd better make this a favorite. It is sublime music sublimely sung. Thank you for it.

This is one of those records that really get into one's soul and stay there. It's the amazing vocal personality of this unique artist, and that indescribably beautiful voice.

Not a casual hearing form her ever. This woman involves you form the very first note. Heartbreaking, full of emotion that she never really apologizes for. Should she? NO! Would that we had more like this today. Brava Signora Millo. I am a long time of your art. Thank you for this antedote for an old man who loves a music that is fading along with me! Brava.

If this is who I think it is thank you for all you praise and support. She is a symbol of opera the way I insist on it being. This then inspires us both, Maestro? Con grande stima e rispetto -

Where can I get the sound track to this video? It is almost unbearably moving!

I so agree. A timeless heart and emotion still beating thru it all. It is on most of the Edison Discs and the Columbia Re-releases of her great work. I made this video using an excerpt from one of these CD's of Muzio. Then added some photos and paintings based on Refice's very moving text. Really something.

Clive 1939 writes that this always made him cry, and "he is a 68 year old male!".
Glorious singing.
