Planned Parenthood protests Texas' new Sonogram Law, sponsored by Texas Right to Life.
The Sonogram Law requires that doctors who are about to commit an abortion allow the mother to see the image of her baby and to hear its heartbeat. Currently, Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in the US, often refuses mothers to see an image of their baby in the womb before an abortion, even when they ask for it.
Often, when mothers see the image of the baby's face, fingers and toes the mother chooses to not abort the baby and instead considers alternatives.
Planned Parenthood receives between $350 to $600 per abortion and does not want women to change their minds once their on the abortion table and has asked their preferred pro-choice abortion judges to rule in their favor that the Sonogram Law is unconstitutional.
Transcript:
Erik Barajas (KTRK): Once the 82nd Legislature adjourned late this summer, several new laws are set to take affect.
Probably the most controversial -- a new sonogram abortion bill that Governor Perry deemed 'priority legislation'. It stipulates that a woman seeking an abortion view a sonogram and hear the heartbeat of the fetus 24 hours before undergoing an abortion. That means she'd have to make two trips to a clinic. The spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast said it amounts to another barrier to women considering an abortion.
Rochelle Tofalla (Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast): This is an unncessary trip. It's unnecessary for them to have an ultrasound in some cases and certainly for politicians to tell a physician that this is something that you're required to do and this is something you must tell that woman regardless of what their professional judgement is in their care for that patient.
Erik Barajas: However, the director for Texas Right to Life says an abortion is a medical procedure and a sonogram is a way to protect the woman's right to all the medical information she needs before making that decision.
Elizabeth Graham (Texas Right to Life): Women who do see the sonogram, the child moving around in the womb, swimming, waving, sucking his or her thumb, and listening to the heartbeat, do choose life for their unborn child.
Erik Barajas: Abortion providers must comply by October 1st, 30 days after the bill becomes law. However the Center for Reproductive Rights, along with Planned Parenthood, has filed a lawsuit in Federal Court, declaring the law unconstitutional. The decision is expected by Thursday.
Politicians need to stick to politics, let the medical professionals take care of their patients.

@archanathgr8 Like letting you die when your family says they want them to keep you alive? Legislation makes sure medical professionals do no harm, including killing unborn children.

@astralislux Okay, but do you want politicians making decisions for their country based on their religious beliefs though? Majority of pro-choice activists are so because of their religious background. Anyways I am not trying to argue, just wanted to voice my opinion :)

@archanathgr8 I believe truth is truth, whether someone is religious or not. Many people who don't believe in god still believe that it's wrong for a society to kill unborn babies just as much as it's wrong for someone to kill an innocent human in her forties. You don't have to believe in god to believe that murder is wrong, although it certainly helps.
It is interesting that people who claim to be abortion supporters often also claim to be agnostic, though. Is this truly a just path?
