SOIA rally against WTC area mosque--lots of lies and blame and fear and simplification. An inspiration to instead support all struggling faith community institutions in their effort to be part of the multicultural world we live in.

On Thursday, June 10, 2010, 5:00 pm--8:00 pm The Peace Walk Begins at: St. Mark's Church, 2609 East 19th Street (corner of Ocean Avenue & Avenue Z.
Subway: B/Q to Sheepshead Bay Station). Ends at: The proposed building site of the mosque, Refreshments will be served. All ages welcome.

Children of Abraham Peace Walk are not affiliated in any way to the Cordoba mosque project but support freedom of religious expression -- but we oppose hate anywhere it rears its ugly head. We support being good and tolerant neighbors.

  • Any phobia is an irrational fear of something, but based on what I have learned about Islam, from Islamic sources, a fear of Islam is completely rational. And if you think peace is a common goal, that goes to show how little you know.

  • @Wilbur665 -- well no you dont undersand Islam by picking out a few selections from scripture-- you can do that with the Bible for sure. Whats the point? You need to deeply understand a faith by reading about how it is organized and interpreted and lived. With over a billion Muslims on the planet I dont think we have any more bad apples than other societies--

  • @Wilbur665 but we do have issues yes indeed at this point in social development and history and to address these issues we need to work together respectfuly.

Dismissing or misunderstanding the entire experience of Islam-as lived- and its diversity-- does not lead to that mutual respect we need to work together.

  • Re below, I mean, a Musalla is not open for the 5 daily prayers all year round but usually only 3 or 4 to accomodate those who work in the area. Park51 is mainly a community center for eveyone to participate in no matter what religion, following the model of the JCC or YMCA which are faith based too. The project is not what it is depicted as in the distorted reporting--some of you know that and some of you may not. Let's please not be led by lies that diminishes us and brings shame to our nation

  • That said, there are many more mosques than 90. Technically this mosque is NOT a mosque --it is a "musalla" a prayer hall that is not open for all 5 prayers throughout the year. There are many many of those in addition to the over 200 mosques in the city, mostly small... mosques are not where radicalization happens in this country folks. It is the internet.

  • No, it is not true that any building containing a mosque is a mosque. There are various office buildings with mosques in them for example. Some Muslims in NYC are uneasy with there being a swimming pool in the same building as prayers so there may be some who feel the whole buidlng must be given over to spiritual or even tradition-compliant activities-- but many others disagree. American Muslims like to open new doors!

  • @NYInterfaith "but we do have issues yes..." ?? That is down-playing the reality by quite a bit, and as for social development, it has been stagnant for at least 1200 years. I can be quite respectful in talking about facts as I understand them, but my concern is that some may define respect to include not speaking honestly.

  • Here is the answer to why all Muslims are blamed for the actions of a "few" - It's because the "good" muslims don't do ANYTHING to end the terror of the "bad" muslims. Were those savages who were dancing in the streets in the Mid-East on 9/11/2001 all terrorists?? Must be.

  • It may give a thrill to insult us (as Muslims or individuals) but finally it is not as responsible as trying to work together for a better world.

  • No one is suing to get rid of Christianity! I dont know what you are referring to but it certainly does not involve us. We are also active in denouncing extremists who in Iraq and Egypt and Iraq are targeting Christians. We need to work together on this instead of demonizing each other.
