"Take Five" is a jazz piece written by Paul Desmond and performed by The Dave Brubeck Quartet on their 1959 album Time Out. Recorded at Columbia's 30th Street Studios in New York City on June 25, July 1, and August 18, 1959,[1] this piece became one of the group's best-known records, famous for its distinctive, catchy saxophone melody and use of the unusual quintuple (5/4) time, from which its name is derived.[2] While "Take Five" was not the first jazz composition to use this meter, it was one of the first in the United States to achieve mainstream significance, reaching #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #5 on Billboard's Easy Listening survey, the precursor to today's Adult Contemporary charts, in 1961, two years after its initial release.

"Take Five" was re-recorded and performed live multiple times by The Dave Brubeck Quartet throughout the group's career. In addition, there have been many covers of the piece. Some versions also feature lyrics, including a 1961 recording with lyrics written by Dave Brubeck and his wife Iola, sung by Carmen McRae. Al Jarreau performed an unusual scat version of the song in Germany in 1976.

"Take Five" has been included in countless movies and television soundtracks, and still receives significant radio play.

Upon his death in 1977, Desmond left the rights to royalties for performances and compositions, including "Take Five", to the American Red Cross, which has since received combined royalties of approximately $100,000 per year.[3]

Vinyl record was washed in a 'Spin Clean Record Washer System' and treated with 'Gruv Glide'. Recorded from an Audio Technica AT-LP120usb turntable/Audio Technica AT-440Mla cartridge, into the phono input of a Harman/Kardon 330c receiver, and finally into an Onkyo Wavio SE-U33GXV USB Digital Audio processor. Recorded from my laptop using Audacity @ 24bit/48,000 Hz.

Exported from Sony Vegas in MP4 format with the following settings:
Audio: 320kbps, 48,000 Hz, 24 Bit, Stereo
Video: 29.970 fps, 1440x1080 Progressive, 12 Mbps

Youtube knocks the audio down from the above, to 128kbps.

  • Dude, you went above and beyond with this one. I have been a Brubeck fan since high school. I even got to interview him once. In the world of Jazz, this is as cool as it gets. You really captured the 'cool' here. Fantastic job. :) JC

  • @BadEditPro Thanks JC! Wow! do you have a transcript or recording of the interview?

  • I love this, thank you.

  • @DBRGroup Glad you enjoyed!

  • Wow, I love the live video of them playing along - good job! My nephew has the same turntable. Last week, I took it apart and rewired the output to bypass the internal USB ADC/preamp. The wire going to the I/O board was routed to two gold female RCA's on the back. The sound quality was much improved - better bass, cleaner mid-range and smoother highs. Next, we are going to rewire the tonearm with 2ft of bulk Cardas wire (4x33gauge). Have you considered rewiring your turntable?

  • @BSD2000 i've been thinking about removing it for a year now, and externally grounding. but building an air bearing tone arm, and later on a custom table, has kept me from doing it actually doing it. when i opened up my TT last year, i didn't like the fact that audio signal goes through some unnecessary resistors on the motor PCB before going to the preamp, can't understand what the point of that could possibly serve.

i should take your word for it and do it anyway though ;)

  • A good record deserves be played in a good turntable. Excellent sound quality and video!.

I have two re-editions of this beauty: 2nd 1960's edition Columbia stereo made in USA with some little scratch, and Third 1970's edition CBS stereo made in México in excellent condition, but I'm looking for a copy of 1st. edition like yours. When I was in high school I had my first 'Time Out' 1st. edition copy, but in mono sound, and several scratches. At the time, I found the mexican '70s edition. =)
