UCSI (Part C) Avoidant Personality Disorder Avoidant personality disorder (APD or AvPD)or Anxious personality disorder (APD) is a personality disorder from the DSM handbook, characterized by a pervasive pattern of social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy, extreme sensitivity to negative evaluation and avoidance of social interaction. People with avoidant personality disorder often consider themselves to be socially inept or personally unappealing, and avoid social interaction for fear of being ridiculed, humiliated, rejected or disliked. They typically present themselves as loners and report feeling a sense of alienation from society.
Avoidant personality disorder is usually first noticed in early adulthood, and is associated with perceived or actual rejection by parents or peers during childhood. Whether the feeling of rejection is due to the extreme interpersonal monitoring attributed to people with the disorder is still disputed.

  • man i wish my old therapist was that understanding as the counselor in the video. I wish i can find somebody else that is so motivating and positive the next time I do therapy intake.

  • I love the tone of the therapist! I prefer to be alone more than to be with people, and I think I even have this. But hearing that therapists voice makes me happy. Although I prefer to be by myself, the most attractive thing to me is an upbeat personality. Very different from myself.

  • @xxcurnuxx .. thanks. I feel a bit better these days now that I'm back working and don't have time to be thinking all day. good luck

  • @roddyrodrodrod For me, I know suicide is not the answer, yet it is not the feeling of being useless, it is the fear that one day I will have no value to others, that they will leave me, I feel as if everything I do is to prove to other that I have value, that they can't ever have a reason to reject me, it consumes everything in my life, I always have this thought in the back of my mind.

  • I wish life was as simple as what happened in that video

  • Even though I am pretty much like Sarah, I don't think I would want help. I wouldn't want to become a puppet like everyone else. Friends and partners only sway you and try to get you to what THEY want anyway. And they call US selfish...

  • I have AVPD too and I can't get rid if it. I feel like I want to die as I can't see any light at the end of the tunnel..

  • I like how well this is done. Very good presentation. But, it does not really get to the way to change yourself. Just tearing up pieces of paper is only a bare beginning. I like how this approaches the subject, but healing the disorder is a more in-depth process. Still, very good job!

  • Often people with social anxiety with avoidance has a tough upbringing with a lot of negative judgement and criticism. In other cases there are people who have had to much praise or overprotection which they cant live up to. The best thing is to give praise when the child actually is doing something good not by routine. This disorder can take a lot of years to treat and a lot of hard work from both patient and therapist. They need to be around positive people a lot.

  • this videos is awesome and surely a therapy by it self
