He was a lot of different things to a lot of different people. He was either the dark messiah, or a con man. A fool or a genius. I think he was somewhere in between.

The satanists are tiny inoffensive weenies, I think that Crowley's philosophy is a little more complex, he seems to have essentially been a sort of "Anarcho-mysticist".
He believed that people should "Do what Thou Wilt" qualifying that statement by suggesting a difference between base desire and higher "will".
He worshiped the higher will, basically.
