This second version of the "pull-string drill" (yo-yo drill ? spinning top drill ?) is made only from natural material.

[not 100% primitive, because I used a knife, a file and even a power drill to shape the wood reel / bobbin, and I didn't make the thread myself (hemp thread bought from a store)].

In this version of the pull-string drill, I increased the diameter of the axis (using a reel / bobbin) where the thread is wound and the force of the thread is applied. This way, we can still produce a useful rotation [hence friction for the fire] when pulling the fragile thread only gently. I try also to exert only light pressure on the drill to ease the rotation and avoid breaking the thread. All these precautions give less friction, but it was enough to produce a coal.

[ok... everything was very dry, drill tip and fireboard were already charred by of previous unsuccessful attempts ...]

Material used :
- fireboard : lime / basswood
- drill : willow
- reel / bobbin : black elder wood (pith removed and enlarged)
- flywheel : unmodified naturally pierced flint nodule
- string : fragile hemp (commercial) thread
- handhold : limpet shell
- handle for the string : no handle necessary (pulling gently)
- coal extender : cattail fluff (collected late october)
- fuel : cattail fluff, wood curls (hazel), paper thin birch barck
- blow pipe : cane

    the spindle tip would be thinner than the part holding the string

    (this would make the work as easy as with the bobbin)
