This is a short instructional video on how to check the "Check Engine" OBD2 engine codes. Turn the ignition on three times in a row simultaneously and the diagnostic trouble codes should appear on the odometer. If there are no codes it will say "done" immediately. If not, the codes will appear one by one on the odometer until it says "done."

Keep in mind, that codes can stay on the computer for a long time even if the "Check Engine" light is not on (like in this video). To reset the codes disconnect the battery for 30 seconds and then reconnect it.

After retrieving the codes, look them up on http://www.wjjeeps.com/faultcodes.htm, which has every single code possible.

Good Luck :)

  • Great Video. I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the 5 times on and off doesn't seem to be working. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • @jedlly77 Hey, it looks like the site had a typo. They said 5 times and 3 times, but i researched it a little more and it turns out that the 2005-2010 works with the three times on and off as well. Just make sure you're not actually turning the car on...just the ignition. Good luck man!

  • What do i do to look up my code. I went on WJjeeps.com but can't find where to go from there

    Code p1685

  • @EmerysVids hey sorry, i should have gave a direct link (wjjeeps.com/faultcodes.htm)

  • @EmerysVids P 1685 means "skim invalid key" = you used an invalid key (like the plastic ones that your insurance company gives you in case you lock yourself out of your car), an unprogrammed key, or sometimes when you slide the keys into fast the computer doesn't have a chance to read them and those are the possible reasons for the code. But either way, there is nothing wrong with your car! If you want to get rid of the code, just disconnect the battery for a few seconds and reconnect it.

  • If you have any other requests for videos please message me. I've done a lot of repair work on my Jeep Grand Cherokee!

  • @jedlly77 I go for 6 times, but you have to do it consistently. On my 2002 it only needed 3 turns.

  • I suggest you CarMd vehicle diagnostic tool.

  • @kwtblack2 Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit Shorted. Basically, what that means is that the wire to the purge control valve is probably shorted and was rubbing on something. You're car is still very driveable though. Check around the charcoal canister area

  • hey dripp i have jeep liberty 2002 and it showed this code p0445 what does it mean and i have check engine light always on !
