Thatcher chose Major because she expected him to be less subservient to the her enemies and more in tune with her. Being a new man, he was more beholden to her than to his Cabinet colleagues or fellow MPs.

A great leader in her time, but no British PM should be ignoring and refusing to discuss in cabinet something strongly felt by both her Chancellor and Foreign Minister. She had stopped listening to her cabinet, and so she had to go. A great pity.
