The Mande Empire covers several countries in West Africa, but my guess is that the similarity to the term Jeli is accidental.
Regardless, I love this video clip! I heard this music in Tamale in Northern Ghana back in 1992, and this is the first time that I have seen a video or audio recording of this music. Bravo!

Very very nice... the sound reminds one of a birimbau. I love the music. Thanks for posting. Also, the name of the instrument - Jenjeli - suggests a relation to the Jeli instruments of the Mande group. Not so?
