Mowing miscanthus grass on Sunday 22nd March. The grass was mowed down with a mower conditioner, then raked into 30 foot rows and then the plan was to bale it with a big square baler and then sell the product on to be converted into fuel. Things didn't go too smoothly on the day though. The baler man had a lot of bother with the knotters so there were a good few broken bales. On top of that he had even more trouble trying to get the pickup to take in the crop as even after passing through the conditioner on the mower the crop still consisted of sticks about 4 foot in length. The crop was very patchy in places but as far as i know it should thicken up for future cuts. There was a good few stones lying about the place and they did harm as well, 2 back windows in two days was not very nice! See pics at the end of the vid. I had hoped to get a video of the baler in action but unfortunately he packed up for the day before I got a chance. He wanted to leave it wilt a couple of days before trying to bale again. So this video features a John Deere 6910 and 530 mower and a Pottinger Eurotop rake on a NH tractor. An unusual days work around these parts!

  • microengineer, deleted your comment by mistake! Strange stuff alright. shcokin patchy to be honest, light crop overall. Apparently it'll thicken up for future cuts but for the moment its very light. Weren't too many weeds to be honest but definitely unusual stuff to be working with. Not too sure if it'd pay you really but sure we'll wait and see how things pan out!

  • FFS!, breaking up the good machines, i'd say he was impressed when he heard about that! how did all this come to be going on anywho

  • Lets just say he wasn't jumping for joy when i told him!! He broke one himself two days before. Nothing to focus the mind on looking out for stones when your head is directly in line for the next one!!! Jim McCarthy's crowd were going baling it so he got someone local to mow it for him. Just down the road from you actually in behind Tommy Everetts house.
