Steve Newman introduces a new "Rainbow Radar" to viewers in Sacramento ... in the middle of the worst drought in memory. No significant rain showed up on it for a couple of years. KXTV's parent company Corinthian Broadcasting (Dunn and Bradstreet) purchased radar units for all of their stations, mandating they be called "Rainbow Radar." Steve usually just called it color radar. It didn't dawn on Steve at the time that the director could have superimposed the radar sweep and data over a color map graphic to make it far more attractive. Hindsight. (less)

  • My god! How much did that equipment cost them back then? It must have ben a fortune!

At the time though, that was cutting edge technology and graphics! And in the 1970's we would watch this kind of thing with amazement!
