When Louis was a teenager he made enough money working in the District to buy a Victrola & some records. Among his favourites were Caruso, Galli-Cuci & Tetrazzini: all great opera singers. Listen to Louis on this recording & you can hear what he learnt from them all. That sense of drama he coupled with superb blues feeling. There aren't enough superlatives to do justice to this track.

Potato Head Blues is my favourite piece of music of all time.

"Tight Like This" is a truly masterful piece of work and a precursor of modernism in jazz. Louis is pushing his horn to the limits, but just listen to Earl Hines' outstanding piano solo where he "moves out", playing, for that period, some pretty remote notes and chords, as well his free approach to the time signature underpinned by the rock steady rhythm section.

What a performance! Armstrong and Hines ham up the verbal exchange but the whole tune has an ominous sound to it that really showcases Louis' fabulous playing.

"Oh it's tight like this!'
"No it's ain't tight like that either."
"I said it is tight like this!"
"Let it be tight like that then!"

I'm so glad you uploaded this...my favorite song of all time too...

Quite possibly my favourite Hot Five recording: apart from Louis' playing, Earl Hines really is at the top of his game, - really love the many wonderful, but seamless and apt, shifts in tempo in the course of one tune

Beautiful indeed... My favorites by Louis are "Struttin' With Some Barbecue", "Potato Head Blues" and "Weary Blues"... "Hotter Than That" is probably the favorite of the majority of many others. I uploaded it less than 2 days ago and I have already 153 hits!
