He played it the way HE thought it should be played. I listened to many versions of this piece before I heard this one and, for me, it was a revelation .. the music finally sounded just right.

It is said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder .. perhaps, in music, the beauty is in the ears of the receiver ??

I have been working on the prelude on my saxophone, so I have listened to many different players, and interpretations of the piece. I can be a music snob (I get it from my teacher), and because of this, I do not agree with his tempo choice. It feels as though he was rushing it to show off his talent. As much as I do love Rostropovich, I believe that if he had slowed it down a bit, he could have created more shapes with the dynamics, and increased the overall expression of the piece.

I don't know.. I think I agree. It does feel a bit rushed and without much feeling to me. I've heard a lot of cellists play this piece and it does benefit from being played more slowly and a bit more reflectively, imo.

Remember that these suites don't have tempo markings, and whilst the dance movements are performed at a tempo appropriate to the style, the Preludes don't have specific instructions as to how they are to be played, hence giving the performer freedom to interpret how they please. Rostropovich plays it this way, and though I don't particularly like his Bach I admire his interpretation. Basically there's no single correct way of playing these pieces, and one shouldn't be condemned for interpreting!
