This was a world war two production variant of the Official Police revolver from Colt. It was originally called the Army Special until 1927 when Colt management gave up on getting a military contract and renamed it the Official Police. It became one of the most popular sidearms with law enforcement.
The Commando revolver is parkerized where the Official Police and Army Special revolvers were blued. After WWII, Colt went back to producing the Official Police variant until 1969.
The Army Special, Official Police, and Commando variants are all built on the "I" frame, originally for the .41 Long Colt Cartridge. Chambered in the smaller .38 caliber, it is a strong gun. It can handle the .38 Special "Keith Loads" which are very potent. To those in the know, the Official Police is a "poor man's Python" as it is built on the same "I" frame. You just gotta produce your own Keith Loads which really gives it some power. Be sure to google the "Keith Load" and the Lyman 358429 bullet.
