You can also tell as he goes into the run for his last pass that he's REALLY dazed... his eyes and head are all over the place. That's so freaking scary.

You don't land on your neck (which would be your cervical vertebrae, as you put it). You land on the top of your skull or the crown, which can both compress your cervical vertebrae and cause all kinds of problems, from fractures to vertebral disc fragmentation and degeneration. AFAIK, Mukhina snapped her spine by chin-planting during a Thomas salto.
