*At Brynn's house, her mother is helping her settle herself comfortably on the couch. Mrs. Lesce has been away with her husband for about a week, and had left Brynn at home with Paige and Gabrielle.*
MRS. LESCE: So, darling, how does your leg feel? The doctor called and told me exactly what's wrong and what they had to fix. They gave me instructions, too, on how long you need to keep on this cast before getting a smaller one...
BRYNN: Yeah, they told me.
MRS. LESCE: I assumed they would. And I heard what happened to you in the first place from that boy who helped you. Joe, wasn't it?
BRYNN: Yeah, he's the one I told you about a few weeks ago, one of Gabrielle's friend's brothers.
MRS. LESCE: Nice boy, very polite. Funny, too.
BRYNN: *Smiling to herself at her mother's approval of Joe.* Yes, he is. He and his brother brought me to the doctor's yesterday, and Joe stayed with me the entire time I was at the hospital.
MRS. LESCE: Yes, as I said, very sweet. And he seemed quite concerned with your well being. What's his last name, again? I don't think he said.
BRYNN: Um... *Up until this point, Brynn had not shared with her mother the fact that she was friends with the Jonas Brothers. Her mother had always kept a distance from her daughter, and they didn't have many deep discussions between them.* Um... Jonas.
MRS. LESCE: *Distractedly.* Hmm..I don't think I know any Jonas'. Do his parents work in politics?
BRYNN: *So relieved that her mother didn't recognize his name, Brynn felt she could put up with any amount of questioning about Joe's parent's occupations. These discussions routinely followed talks about Brynn's new friends, because both of her parents were extreme work-a-holics.* I don't think so. I am not sure what he does. I'll have to ask Joe.
MRS. LESCE: *Sharply.* Are you seeing him again?
BRYNN: *Surprised.* Of course. Why not?
MRS. LESCE: Well, it just seems like you are moving fairly quickly. You just met this boy, am I right?
BRYNN: I met him almost a month ago. And what do you mean, "We're moving quickly?"
MRS. LESCE: *Shrewdly.* I noticed that he was holding your hand as you walked in the door.
BRYNN: So? If you didn't notice, I was having trouble walking! *She points to her huge cast.*
MRS. LESCE: Don't use that sarcastic tone with me. You better be thinking about what you are doing, Brynn.
BRYNN: *Shouting, now.* Thinking about what I am...? Mother! We are JUST FRIENDS!
*Brynn didn't know what made her lie... possibly anger, or resentment... but she found herself trying to hide her true feelings for Joe from her mother.*
MRS. LESCE: Do not raise your voice. I am trying to have a civil conversation...
BRYNN: Civil conversation? No. You are trying to limit who I am friends with, just because they are boys. I'm sixteen years old mother! I'm not four! And I thought you said Joe was nice!
MRS. LESCE: *Calmly.* Well I can see that you are very upset over the trauma of the past 24 hours. I will let you get some rest, and talk to you about this later. *She turns and walks out of the room.*
BRYNN: *Calling after her.* Talk about what later? What is there to talk about? I thought you liked him!
*Brynn falls back into the cushions of the couch, very angry. She thought that it was hard to believe that, just minutes ago, she had been kissing the most amazing boy in the world. Whereas now...*
MRS. LESCE: *Walking back into the room, on her cell phone.* Yes, okay. Hold on. *Speaking to Brynn now.* Brynn, darling, I have to go into the office for a little while. I'll be back in around two hours. Call my cell if you need anything.
*Brynn nods angrily at her once, and her mother disappears into the coat closet, searching for something to wear over her pants suit. Finding a suitable jacket, Mrs. Lesce grabs her keys and leaves the house. The moment Brynn hears the car pull away, she whips out her cell phone and texts Gabrielle and Paige, telling them to come over ASAP.*
