Urban Corps: Believe in the Spirit of Youth

Since 1989, the Urban Corps of San Diego County has served as a bridge to a better life for thousands of disadvantaged young people ages 18-25. The mechanism for change in the lives of these youth is green job training through resource conservation projects. While working and learning the youth get a second chance to earn a high school diploma, becoming environmental stewards in the process.

The Urban Corps was started by the San Diego City Council to solve the problem of youth dropping out of high school along with the need to preserve local resources. The organization's dynamic mission -- to provide job training and educational opportunities to young adults in the fields of conservation, recycling, and community service while protecting natural resources and instilling the importance of community involvement -- makes the Urban Corps a unique and powerful program for the San Diego community.

Urban Corps' programs and services include:
• Environmental Services & Habitat Restoration
• Community Improvement Services & Graffiti Erasers
• Urban Forestry & the SDG&E Tree Smart Education Program
• Recycling Services, Education & Outreach
• Weatherization Energy Efficiency Residential Rehab (WEER), and
• Special Projects including emergency and fire fuel reduction services.

The onsite John Muir Charter School offers a high standard of education while the Corps-to-Career department offers developmental case management and one-on-one assistance with resumes, interviewing, job searches, and post-secondary educational goals. When the 200+ youth Corpsmembers in the program are not at school, they are gaining hands-on experience in the green job field.
