Joe Biden and Barack Obama have to turn themselves into geeks, use a lot of libraries and schools to explain themselves and their urgent team for these huge innovative economic tasks.
We need to use these high speed rails to generate electricity as well. Rails use up a lot of surface. We must put these invaluable assets in good use. Generating energy must be one of the basic requirements for these high speed rail projects so these energy infrastructures and assets can be spread across cities, useful lands, and farms.
And also don't forget that because the gas tax hasn't been raised since the early 1990s, Highway Trust Fund runs short the tune of 10 billion every year which has to be topped up with a cash transfer from the general fund annually
National Highway System cost 450 billion when adjusted for inflation
a High-Speed Rail network in one major region is going to be in the tens of billions, and since you're looking at 4 regions at least that could do with it - West Coast, Texas, Mid-West, North East - I think the cost would be a total of 100-150 billion.
@jpbalkenende Southwest Airlines was a leader in killing the Texas Triangle rail corridor. You can just think of what they think of the whole rail program today. But don't worry their days are numbered. The cost of fuel will catch up to them too! And they use lots of it!
@BoomerNavy70 You are so right! Don't forget the most powerful lobbyist the highways. And their not even americans anymore. Many are foreign car companys! Oil companys with american names!
THIS. I'm tired of people complaining about all the money it would cost, the "pointlessness" of the project, etc. Build it, and people will want to take to the rails again. If I could go NY-Toronto in less than 5 hours, I'd use the rails given the pain of airport security. Same if I could go transcontinental in a night.
