omg!I thought of the same thing like 5 mins ago!this is definitely the way to go.Recently Warren Buffet also said that the future of transport is in trains and the part about solar energy makes so much sense(Specially since we have so much land up north that we don't use!)The only problem I can see is the collection of snow on elevated tracks, that may present a problem when in high speed+do you have any info on how many trains run on a single high speed track?

No,I am brazilian. The Government here says they are going to open the bidding to build a high speed railway connecting Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. It would be one of the infrastructure investments for the 2014 fifa world cup in Brazil. As i don't belive in our authorities' good will i fear this railway won't be more than a project 'till 2014. At least we are doing a good work developing renewable fuels, but i am still for investing on railways rather than in fuels!

HA! Sadly, no. We continue to pour money into road and air travel, which is going to kill us as the price of oil increases. Unfortunately, we have an oil PM in the same way the Americans have an oil President.

You don't have a high speed trans-canada railway, but at least you have a trans canada railway! I wish we had something like this in my country, even though it's not a high speed one.

Are you in the U.S.?
The only reason Canada exists today is because the federal gorvernment of the time promised a railway to link the country together. Nowadays it's in sad shape. It takes 3-4 days to get from Toronto to Vancouver, and costs $2,000 or more for a sleeper. (Although it's a great trip.) The passenger trains always take second priority to the freights (same problem in the U.S.), so there are frequent delays.
