MISSISSAUGA CHOSEN TO BECOME FIRST NATIONAL LITTLE ACES TENNIS COMMUNITY

Tennis Canada launches major market community pilot initiative

Toronto, May 25, 2010 -- Tennis Canada, in partnership with the Ontario Tennis Association, the City of Mississauga, the Peel District School Board, and community clubs and partners, announced Tuesday the launch of a new major community tennis pilot program in the southwest region of Mississauga, Ontario. Named the "Mississauga Little Aces Tennis Community," this initiative will introduce affordable and accessible tennis programs for children and families in gyms, community centres, clubs and schools. This project, the first of its kind for the sport, will be tested in the sixth-largest city in Canada before expanding to additional major markets across the country over time.

The program will officially launch on Sunday, May 30 with a kick-off party from 1-3 p.m. in the parking lot of the Canadian Tire at 900 Southdown Road. The festival-like atmosphere will include games, prizes, a free barbeque and special guests. Most importantly, children will be able to participate in mini-tennis, a scaled-down tennis format that uses age/skill appropriate equipment and court sizes to ensure early success and enjoyment.

Moving into the fall, Tennis Canada and the Ontario Tennis Association will be working with local schools and the Peel District School Board to assist with the inclusion of tennis into the physical education curriculum.

Beginning January 2011, a Mississauga Minor Tennis League will be created, in association with City of Mississauga Recreation and Parks, to provide young players with a team-based recreational playing opportunity and format. As participants grow, they will be able to find more advanced tennis training at local clubs, including the Ontario Racquet Club, Mississauga's certified Tennis Development Centre (TDC) and one of the top clubs in the country.

The Ontario Racquet Club will also host a talent search day in Mississauga with the hopes of finding potential young players who can move into a more serious training regime and towards competing at the national and international level.

Mississauga will be a role model for the country as the long-term plan is to work with provincial tennis association partners and community leaders nationally to implement similar tennis pathways in select major markets on an annual basis.
