I am not shocked that people like Rick Warren and Robert Schuller signed this but I am shocked that John Stott signed it if I am thinking of the same John Stott (Basic Christianity).
Also, I believe it is Romans 14 that states whatsoever is not of faith is sin. Hebrews 3 states, "having an evil heart of unbelief." Unbelief is lifting your opinions above God's. It is saying, knowingly or unknowingly, that you think you know better than a perfect, holy God.
Those who hold to the fundamentals of the Scriptures are usually held to be arrogant by those who don't, but what is more arrogant, believing a historical record given by a Sovereign potter or believing (or having faith) in a finite pot that says, "No."?
The Bible is the Word of God, period. Think about it like this. The Bible makes the claim that it is God breathed by the same Holy Spirit that inspired the prophets in days of old. Their prophecies were 100% accurate (without error) So with your assertions, it's either believing the God inspired, God breathed, unfailing Scriptures or yourself. Do you see how ridiculous that is?
How does unbelief not lead to evil? Unbelief is one of the most evil sins there are. It is evil in itself. Jesus Christ said that everyone who does not believed is condemned already. It's a damnable sin.
Not merely tales. That's the thing about the bible. It's so many differnt things. Essays, personal letters, poetry, recounted oral traditions & myth. History. The part that are "tales" require some contemplation to sort out. My point is that God won't smite us for disbelieving a portion of it, though he may smite us if we do evil after the un-belief. I also assert that un-belief doesn't necessarily lead to evil.
The thing is, your god won't punish you for not believing it. That is accurate. The God presented in Scripture is the only true and wise God. The god you say won't punish you eternally for unbelief wouldn't because he couldn't. He doesn't exist. He's an idol in your mind that you've made to basically tell you that you're a pretty good person who does occasionally bad things.

It sounds humble, but it's unbelief dressed up, plain and simple.
