@Dragonking1984 I'm not sure what a 'day labor centre' is, but I'm pretty sure you don't have to live there. People worked, lived and often died in workhouses, which were prisons in all but name.

@ianchard my mistake you are indeed correct. soon after seeing your comment i was confused until i read the last part. forgot that scrooge himself had said that he gives money to the work houses *day labor centers by today's standards* and the debtors prison.

@Dragonking1984 12th century? In which country? Debtors' prisons existed in the UK in the 19th century (read your Dickens!).
