A behavior that is rewarded is likely to be repeated again. Sure beats using the traditional ways of punishment and coersion.This is how positive emotions are developed. That's why many people who have a great manager actually enjoy the working conditions. That's why student love their teachers and reading books. It's all about shaping with consequences that particular individual finds rewarding. Small successes. Balancing challenges. Different strokes for different folks.

@DackIsBack the hitler youth was actually quite like the scouts, the underlying propaganda has very little to nothing to do with operant conditioning.
Operant conditioning is a perspective concerned with behaviourist psychology, which simply says, that what we learn, are behaviours, which are patterns of muscle movents.
Admittedly the the name 'behaviour modification' sounds a little sinister, however, it is simply a more effective way of teaching, rather than brain-washing...
