Some days when I would be railfanning the Ottumwa Subdivision in Monmouth, I could hear train horns blowing to the south of me. This is the Chillicothe Subdivision. One Satarday morning with nothing better to do, I decided to start walking South down a lonly stretch of road until I found it. In no time, I was surrounded by nothing but farmland, in a landscape so quiet you could hear a pin drop a mile away. The tracks were farther than I imagined because it was taking forever to get there but I could hear the horns getting louder as I walked along. An eerie mix of lonliness and serenity came over me and distracted me from the real reason I was walking out here. I then stopped when I saw the silhouette of a stacktrain in the distance, rolling through the countryside about 2 miles away. I stopped to set up my tripod to wait for another. In no time, another Westbound appeared to my Left emerging behind the rolling hills. I then realized, I have never done this kind of railfanning, or literally been all alone in the middle of nowhere. It's hard to believe this very line runs through urban Lockport and Joliet. The lonliness really gets to you out here. Also there was about 2 hours of walking in each direction, just thought I'd tell ya.

  • Now that's a relaxing environment! No Cops, no excessive cars/people, no quiet zones, and no commuter trains to break up the action. This is even better than La Fox. I liked the Amtrak at the end. I also liked the mechanical bell unlike those robotic sounding e-bells. Nice job Frank! Please make more videos of this location.

  • wow, Frank this video is awesome, I like the first view, and the sun shining on the side of the 2nd UP train is too cool. and sweet catch of the Amtrak with the biz cars.

  • Two hours of walking in each direction? Didn't you have a car at the time?

  • Is that a WCH mechanical bell?

  • Nice video Frank. Peaceful. Makes me miss home. I lived 1 house away from the Long Island Rail Road! You need a new tripod bro. Th eone you have is junk. You can tell, when your panning gets stuck and sort of jumps. I have same issues. Its just cheap tripod.....
